Southport, Port Shepstone, KZN
Southport is a very small town half way between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone, KZN south coast. Set so close to a similar town called Anerley that they are often recognized as each other; the Anerley Post Office is in the centre of the Southport business area.
Southport runs into the Indian Ocean on its left, and on its right, stretches across agricultural ground to the South Coast Durban/Port Edward highway.
The old coastal road (alternative route to the South Coast highway) which runs from Hibberdene to Port Shepstone cuts through Southport at its only robot. Close to this robot is a hive of activity and a landmark Total refueling station. A string of small businesses run along the slip-road leading to this robot, which includes the Vintage Treasures antique shop, and Gas Mart (which may also fall under Anerley). Here you will also find a couple of restaurants and take-away food suppliers, a second-hand dealership, electrical appliance shop, medical and dental centre, and other interesting shops.
The Southport beach is also known as Anchors beach, named after the pub/restaurant on this beach. It has blue flag status, life savers in season, public holidays and on weekends, tended ablution facilities, a tarred parking area, shaded braai areas close to the beach, and a tidal pool. Visitors and locals enjoy fishing, diving and swimming along this vibrant stretch of the ocean.
This quiet coastal town is ideal for holiday makers who wish to relax at a slow tempo. It also boasts a library, clinic and bowling club. Although there is plenty of holiday accommodation available in and around the area, they are most often fully booked up in season.
Southport is about 120km south from Durban, 14km from Hibberdene and 10km from Port Shepstone, 75km from Oribi Gorge and the Wild Coast Casino. It falls within the Ugu District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
